Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.
Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.
The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.
“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”
Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.
The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.
“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.
“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”
Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.
“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”

Dapoxetine+sildenafil is used in the treatment of premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction in adult men. Premature ejaculation is when a man ejaculates (orgasms) more quickly with less sexual stimulation than the man or his partner would like. This could lead to problems in a sexual relationship. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to keep a hard and erect penis suitable for sexual activity.
Dapoxetine+sildenafil contains Dapoxetine and Sildenafil. Dapoxetine is a short-acting selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases the serotonin levels in the brain, thereby increasing the time to ejaculate and improving the control over ejaculation. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor and works by relaxing the blood vessels. It can improve blood flow to the penis and helps to get an erection when sexually stimulated.
You should use this medicine exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The common side-effects of Dapoxetine+sildenafil are dizziness, headache, nausea (feeling sick), stuffy nose, facial flushing (reddening of the face), indigestion, dry mouth, and vision problems such as light sensitivity or blurred vision. These side effects usually resolve without requiring medical attention. However, if any of these side effects persist or get worse, inform your doctor immediately.
It is not recommended to take Dapoxetine+sildenafil if you are allergic to any contents of it. Do not take Dapoxetine+sildenafil if you have severe heart or liver problems, a recent history of heart attack or stroke, hypotension (low blood pressure), eye diseases or vision problems, a history of fainting, and mania or depression. Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines such as nitrates (to treat blood pressure or chest pain), antidepressants, antibiotics, or painkillers. Dapoxetine+sildenafil should not be taken by children and women. It should be used with caution in the elderly. Do not take excessive amounts of alcohol while using Dapoxetine+sildenafil as it may impair the ability of erection and increase the risk of side effects. Dapoxetine+sildenafil may cause dizziness and affect vision, so do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you are not fully alert.

Dapoxetine+sildenafil may impair your thinking, emotions, conduct, and language function. This could cause you to feel dizziness, fainting, and/or blurred vision. Be sure to use caution if you have any of the following symptoms, such as sudden vision loss, increased in the right eye, or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, must be treated: rapid speech disorder, speech disorder, hallucinations, coma, or fits (such as fits (sudden) death), confusion, epilepsy, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, irregular heartbeat, priapism (prolonged and painful erection), or prolonged and painful sperm production.
Dapoxetine+sildenafil may cause low blood pressure. If you experience any sudden lower pressure, feel dizzy, or lightheaded, feel very breathless, or that is how you feel when you first start taking Dapoxetine+sildenafil, do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. You could get fainting, lightheadedness, or fainting if you get certain side effects. You could also get blood pressure changes (e.g., light-headedness, headache, weakness, confusion, loss of balance) and get dizzy, faint, or develop fainting while you are taking Dapoxetine+sildenafil. Do not stop using this medicine until you are finished with it. Do not take Dapoxetine+sildenafil for more than 10 days without consulting your doctor.
A new study shows the risks of erectile dysfunction are even more severe.
A group of doctors at a university in Gujarat, India, was conducting a study of Viagra, the drug used for treating erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, the brand name for the drug sildenafil, was tested for safety in more than 20 men with erectile dysfunction.
A group of doctors at a university in Gujarat, India, was conducting a study of Viagra, the brand name for the drug sildenafil.
The study, which was carried out with a group of men with ED, was designed to compare the effects of Viagra and sildenafil on erectile dysfunction in men taking the drugs. The men were randomly assigned to receive either sildenafil (Viagra) or placebo on a daily basis.
The study was conducted at a hospital in the Gujarat state.
Viagra was taken by men after a 30-minute break. After a 15-minute interval between the drug intake, the men had to wait 30 to 45 minutes in order to be able to get an erection. They also had to have sex several times before they could get an erection.
After 30 minutes of taking the drug, the men who were taking Viagra had to wait 15 to 30 minutes in order to get an erection. The group that took the placebo had a mean erection time of 5.4 minutes, while the group that took sildenafil had a mean of 5.6 minutes.
The results showed that Viagra led to more frequent and harder erections than the placebo.
The researchers concluded: "This is the first study that demonstrates the increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction in men taking sildenafil."
The study, conducted by Dr. S. T. Khera, a research fellow in the Department of Surgery at The Gujarat University of Medical Sciences, is a preliminary investigation into the use of sildenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The researchers did not conduct further research on the safety and efficacy of Viagra in people taking sildenafil. The study, which is based on a small sample size and without control groups, is being carried out on the basis of a single patient."

AddiagaideErectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. It can be caused by various factors, including underlying medical conditions, and individuals should be advised to steer clear of prescription drugs that might interact with certain vaccines.PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra work by increasing the levels of a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), in the smooth muscle cells of the penis. This causes an expansion of the muscle mass within the spongy tissue, leading to an erection.
cGMP is a vital structure in the penis.
